News: Shame of millionaire paedophile who abused 142 boys in 12 months

Sexual ViolenceTHE EXPRESS: A MILLIONAIRE dubbed Britain's worst paedophile was jailed for life yesterday after sexually assaulting thousands of young boys over 40 years.

Victims clapped and cheered as pervert William Goad, 60, was warned he may never be freed because he poses such an extreme danger to children.

Businessman Goad once boasted of abusing 142 boys in a single year and even urged one youngster to snatch a five-year-old boy off the street for him.

One of his victims was only eight when he raped him in front of another man during a camping trip. Others were assaulted up to three times a week for three years.

Two of the pervert's victims have killed themselves and several others have attempted suicide.

One young man summed up the devastating impact of being one of Goad's long-term victims. He told police: "Sometimes I wish he'd killed me rather than leave me with the torture, memories and nightmares."

Goad, who ran shops and market stalls, lured vulnerable youngsters into his clutches by offering them money, toys, sweets and drink.

His home - equipped with pool table and computer games - would attract at least 10 boys aged between 13 and 16 almost every day.

He even paid a GBP50 "finder's fee" to victims to introduce him to their young friends, Plymouth Crown Court was told. Wealthy Goad guaranteed the boys' silence by threatening to harm their mothers or giving them cash - up to GBP150 each.

He admitted 14 specimen charges of buggery and two of indecent assault.

Judge William Taylor told the monster: "The boys were attracted to you by your wealth, your apparent kindness and the facilities to be found at your home which was a magnet for youngsters who went there seeking excitement, money or drugs.

"You used money, drugs and the offer of jobs to purchase sexual favours. Some boys were groomed while others were effectively raped soon after they met you.

"I am in no doubt you pose an ongoing and serious danger to young men and will do so for an indeterminate time."

Goad will have to serve at least six years and six months before he can apply for parole.

But Judge Taylor told him: "You will not be released until authorities are satisfied you no longer pose any threat to children. In your case life may well mean just that."

Some of Goad's victims spoke of their delight at seeing their tormentor jailed for life. As he was led to the cells one shouted 'Beast' - the name they called him after his sex attacks.

David Batcup, defending, had told the court that Goad was a sick man who needed a heart by-pass operation while awaiting trial.

When the barrister said Goad might die in prison, a victim shouted:

"Good - the sooner the better." Later another victim said: "I hope he rots in hell. He ruined so many lives."

A man who was a child when Goad abused him, said: "My life is worthless because of that bastard. A lot of us have turned to drink and drugs and crime to shut out what the beast did to us. He should never be let out of jail. I hope he has it rough in prison.

"Some of his victims might be in there and could get to him and get revenge for us. That would be the sort of justice he should understand - picking on a weak vulnerable victim."

Goad's first known attacks date back to 1965 which means it is likely he has abused thousands of children.

When police started closing in on him he fled to Thailand where they fear he carried on abusing children.

Finally arrested after returning to Britain on a fake passport last year, Goad falsely accused victims of attempting to obtain compensation from him.

He had been in court three times for indecent assault in the past but each time was let off with a light sentence. In 1972, he was put on probation and put on a sex offenders rehabilitation course. He was given suspended sentences in 1980 and 1987.

He was said to have preferred boys with blond hair and blue eyes aged between 13 and 16 but at least one of his victims was as young as eight.

Martin Meeke, QC, prosecuting, said Goad groomed victims by offering them well-paid jobs in his shop and inviting them back to his home "Goad has been a voracious, calculating, predatory and violent homosexual paedophile for 40 years, " added Mr Meeke.

Boys who went to his comfortable home in Plymouth were treated to sweets, cash, pool and games.

Mr Meeke said: "It was a lure or a magnet for these young boys, who seem always to be on hand."

The earliest charge against Goad involved a boy of 10 who was attacked between 1965 and 1967. He met the youngster through a camping club.

The boy's character completely changed after he was raped by Goad.

His schoolwork suffered and he later turned to drink and drugs. He was plagued by nightmares and contemplated suicide.

As Goad was taken to a high security, segregated cell, it emerged how he destroyed the lives of victims with relentless sexual abuse and threats of violence to keep them silent.

Everything he did was directed at meeting boys. He employed them at his shops and market stalls, owned two houses overlooking school playgrounds and ran a camping club.

Mr Meeke added: "Police conducted a huge inquiry and they understand that there has not been a single defendant with more victims than this man."
