Teenage sisters forced to prostitute to help family

Porn, Prostitution, Sex IndustryBy Nir Hasson, Haaretz Correspondent

Two sisters aged 13 and 14 from a Negev town were employed for a long period of time as prostitutes in order to alleviate their family's financial problems, police revealed Tuesday.

Roughly one month ago, a woman noticed one of the sisters performing oral sex on a man in a public area. She later saw the girl taking money from the man, and giving it to an older woman.

The witness contacted the Negev police, which opened an undercover investigation into the matter.

During the investigation it emerged that many residents of the town knew about the girls' involvement in prostitution but did not report it to police.

The sisters were located by police recently, and a youth investigator questioned the two.

The girls told investigators they have gone to the city market for more than a year, prostituting themselves in exchange for NIS 50 per client. They gave the money to their mother and another female relative.

Police on Tuesday arrested one of the men who had sex with the older sister, a resident of the village of Lakiya aged 20. The man will be taken to court Wednesday for the extension of his remand.

Police are now trying to find other men who solicited prostitution from the minors. Detectives expect to make two more arrests in the next few days.

Police stress that although the girls agreed to engage in sexual contact, according to the law the men who solicited prostitution from them are guilty of statutory rape, a serious offence.

In addition police are investigating suspicions that the girls' mother and relative knew about their occupation and did nothing about it. The mother, in her thirties, was questioned by police and denied the allegations against her. She was released under restricting conditions.

Police are still looking after the second family relative involved in the affair. Welfare authorities in the town were informed regarding the details of the investigation in order to find an appropriate solution for the girls.
