| News: Legislation would let prostitutes sue their pimps |
March 9, 2005 (SPRINGFIELD, Ill.) — Women forced into prostitution would be able to sue their pimps under legislation approved today by an Illinois House committee.
Supporters say prostitutes are victims of violence and psychological abuse. The legislation would let them seek damages from pimps, brothels and even customers.
Former prostitute Olivia Howard calls the measure a valuable tool to help women rebuild their lives.
Lyn Schollett of the Coalition Against Sexual Assault says three other states have similar laws.
The bill passed unanimously in the civil law committee and now goes to the full House.
(The bill is HB1299. On the Net: http://www.legis.state.il.us )
