A global campaign to raise awareness of violence against women
Dear Colleagues:
As you may know, eleven months ago we launched the One in Three© awareness campaign to organize against violence against women. Since then we have had a terrific response from supporters around the world. We are pleased to recently have New Zealand Maori actress Rena Owen join us as a campaign spokesperson.
“I played the role of a victim of domestic violence, Beth Heke, in the
ground breaking New Zealand feature film, Once Were Warriors. The film tells the story of Jake Heke, a violent man who beats his wife and terrorizes his
children, frequently when drunk. Yet Jake obviously loves his family. This is the universal story of the tragic reality of domestic violence. While much of our attention has been spent recently on terrorism in the Middle East, we should not lose sight of the terrorism many women and children experience everyday. One in Three© reminds us of the on-going and unacceptable violence that still exists in our homes and communities around the world. This campaign has my full support! Please join and help us put an end to violence against women and children!!”

One in Three© campaign supporters come from communities everywhere. They include police departments, prosecutor’s offices, city councils, domestic
violence and sexual assault programs, faith-based communities, colleges and
universities, men's anti-violence groups, and more.
Over eight thousand (8,000) people are raising awareness about domestic and
sexual violence by wearing the One in Three© wristband in fifteen US
states, four Canadian provinces, Switzerland, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines.
An important work recently released by the Geneva Centre for the Democratic
Control of the Armed Forces (DCAF) called Women in an Insecure World speaks again to the scope of the problem of violence against women globally.
Considering the wristband a catalyst in raising awareness, DCAF (_www.dcaf.ch_ (
http://www.dcaf.ch/) ) is using the One in Three© campaign to help promote their research in Brussels, New York, Washington DC, Vienna and around the world by attaching a wristband to the book.
Another success is that many V-Day campus organizers from Maryland and the Philippines have successfully used the wristbands to significantly increase
their proceeds.
Ginny NiCarthy—Author “Getting Free” and Activist says in her One in
Three© endorsement:
My visits to Iraq, Colombia and Afghanistan have underlined for me the
dangers of being a woman or girl in many parts of the world. In numerous
countries women and girls are subjected to individual and institutional violence. It is critical that women (and men) unite in a worldwide campaign to stop the violence. The One in Three© campaign is an excellent effort to connect us in that struggle.
